Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) Prototype

HDM developed a pilot system to test the feasibility of linking real-time GPS location data to Boston Edison's work management system as a way to decrease customer response time, improve emergency response time, and make staff scheduling more efficient. To test this prototype system, HDM installed cellular based GPS systems in service vehicles. The location data was linked to MapInfo desktop mapping software operating on a PC at BECo's headquarters.
