Cambridge, MA ... The Massachusetts Chapter of the American Planning Association has selected The Massachusetts Pedestrian Transportation Plan as the winner of the 1998 Comprehensive Planning Award. The Plan received the award in the Outstanding Planning Category, which recognizes a plan, program or process of unusually high merit. Prepared by Wallace, Floyd, Associates with assistance from Harvard Design and Mapping, HDR Engineering, and Boston Affiliates, The Massachusetts Pedestrian Transportation Plan was developed for the Massachusetts Highway Department as a statewide policy plan to better serve walkers. "The Ped Plan" provides strategies to improve pedestrian conditions in urban, suburban, and rural areas throughout Massachusetts. The Ped Plan includes a mini-encyclopedia of pedestrian and safety data, a GIS analysis of how different street patterns impact the effective walking distance between two points, a conceptual model of walking mode choice, planning guidelines, action plan, and checklists to facilitate planning.
